Battle plans.
4 musicians converge to discuss rehearsal order, members, parts.
4 musicians. 4 different cultures. Join for music making.
Off stage, Nowon Concert Hall, prior to the joint rehearsal of both Nowon Orchestra & IYCA
for this historic 2008 tour. The devotion of Maestro Song to a great concert blew me away.
Here, he is offering his 8 french horns and entire brass section for our John Williams finale.
It's great to see musicians working together on creating a finished, first-rate product.
The desire to help each other through music is a powerful concept. Without it, there is no concert.
Pre-rehearsal and pre-concert jitters are often due to lack of preparation or lack of unity in one vision.
While everyone has their own concept of what is and can be, only when there is agreement and compromise
do you get progress and results.
Great conductors are attentive to details, as pictured here.

The concert was sold-out. Every seat was taken, by family, friends, children, city and government officials.
Seated in the audience were the two mayors of Seoul and Irvine, as well as the families of IYCA musicians.
Irvine Mayor Sukhee Kang flew redeye out of LAX the night before so he could attend this historic concert.
This is a photo of the audience prior to the concert, which began with the Nowon Youth Orchestra,
followed by the Irvine Young Concert Artists (IYCA).
I'll never forget the dismay of some friends of mine who could not get in because the concert was sold-out.

Maestro Young Kyu Song and Albert Wu pose for their only photo together.
We met a week before, spoke for hours during lunch, and Maestro Song knew
every musician I knew from the Vienna Philharmonic. We spoke about the music
world in Korea, his schedule, his contracts, how the orchestra there works, how
they treat him, and his ten years spent in Vienna. It was a great talk, and it is my
wish to reconnect with him soon in another concert. He is a humble musician,
thoughtful, warm, and willing to do anything to make a concert happen. A guest
conductor in several orchestras all throughout and outside of Seoul, Maestro Song
is selfless and spoke candidly about the orchestra world, how music is viewed in
Korea, and who takes music seriously and why they learn it or quit and why they
quit. It was a true cultural exchange when i met with him a week before the IYCA
tour, my glimpse into his world. In our one concert together, he sacrificed podium
time and offered his brass players (college students in Seoul) to make our joint
work a success. We had an understanding. And it is rare for a conductor -- who
are often egomaniacs pushing their career and fame through an orchestra -- to take
time to talk and share honest opinions about the world. It's the world that I am used
to and often encourage my students to embrace. (Albert Wu, Nov 2010)

from youth orchestra to youth orchestra. I hope young musicians
understand the value of joint concerts.
